A smart Digital Incidence Meter

Let me introduce my version of the Digital Incidence Meter. The idea was certainly not to develop any electronic device but just to use what now everybody has: a Smartphone !!!

Over the past weeks, I tried several android applications and discover recently "clinometer" that is perfect for our use (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plaincode.clinometer&hl=fr)

This is a free App: Because it is free, you will have some ads, but this is still only a small banner.
With my smart phone and this App in hands, I just needed to create the rest of the tool around it, which I did this week end. The tool is 3D printed and use a square tube 7.5x7.5 from Alfer.

Clinometer is precise enough (~0.1°), it is smooth, and you can calibrate it, so it is easy to measure the V-angle of a plane by setting the zero for the wing, then measure the tail angle.

The mobile holder can receive a smartphone up to 6 inches. This is a great re-use of you old smarphone for example !

The Monteynard Village and the lake from the sky

Monteynard is a small French village, located in the department of Isere and the Rhone- Alpes region, 787 meters above sea level. Its inhabitants are called the Monteynardons and Monteynardonnes . The municipality covers 10.7 km ² and 506 residents since the last population census dates back to 2007.

The village overlooks the lake of Monteynard-Avignonet, an artificial water reservoir for the Électricité de France power station on the Drac River. The lake was created in 1961, when the 145-metre-high dam was built. The lake is 10 kilometres long, and in some places up to 300 metres wide.

This lake is often windy and wavy. It is considered to be one of the best places for windsurfing and kitesurfing in Europe. It is also an important site for fishing, as it has a great variety of fish species. Swimming in the lake is permitted.

[Review] Vagabond XL from Hacker Model

Introduction

One year after releasing the successful VTPR EPP glider Vagabond, Hacker Model decided to create a revisited and larger version with a wingspan of 2 meters. When I saw first the specs, I told to myself, will this version still be a VTPR plane (Voltige très près du relief), which means "aerobatic maneuvers very near the ground")? What is the benefit is a larger wingspan? This is what I propose to discover in this review.

What is different?

Apart the wingspan, the length of the fuselage is the same. Comparing the fuselage shape side by side, the XL version has a bigger lateral area, a bigger fin and rudder. The elevator servo that was located at the front moved to the rear boom, close to the tails. This is a bit of deception, because first specs and pictures where displaying a pulley. I don’t know why this has been abandoned to be replaced by a more conventional control command. The wing features the same airfoil, with the wing tip extended to 2m. Ailerons are near…

[Essai] Alula TREK, tout change mais l'esprit reste !

L'aile volante en mousse et véritable best-seller mondial est de retour et cela va en ravir plus d'un ! Il est vrai que l'arrêt brutal de la production de l'Alula EVO avait laissé un peu tout le monde sur le carreau et quelques rares exemplaires se vendaient à bon prix sur le marché de l'occasion. L'Alula TREK est donc la second génération de l'Alula moulés et se veut plus aboutie que ce soit sur le plan aérodynamique, mais aussi assemblage et surtout au final en vol. Alors sans plus attendre, je vous propose un essai détaillé de cet oiseau !

Quoi de neuf?
Il est vrai que lorsque j'ai vu les premières photos de cette nouvelle mouture, je me suis d'abord fait la remarque: "ben ... c'est exactement la même ?!". Mais pour découvrir que cette nouvelle version a en fait changé en profondeur, il faut discuter plus longuement avec Michael Richter, le "papa" de l'Alula. [Video review] F3X Building Clinic from RadioCarbonArt

Paul Naton recently released 2 new educational videos. The first one is F3X Building Clinic and explains step by step how to assemble a F3J competition plane giving details. After 21 years of F3F, this means many plane assembled, plus review, so I'm used to it, but it is always interresting to see how other people do, and learn new assembling technics. And this has been the case with this video. I would say that I do the same for 90% of the work, but I could learn some nice tips on the wiring for exemple.

So what is covered in this video ?

The first part is introducing  the hand tools, soldering tools, the glue needed for the assembly, followed by the equipement used, especially the servo, servo frames, batteries, wires, connectors. Paul is guiding us through the zero setting of the servos and the cycling of them, and an explanation of the typical setting/mixer that will be used on the radio. Li-Ion 2 cells battery soldering

This is step by step how I'm soldering my Li-ion Battery for my F3F planes. I use 2 cells of 2900mAh, and a servo connector as balancer blug, the signal being the middle point. I'm also now connect the 2 cell with a wire no rigid connection, it is more secure from my point of view. When charging about 1A, it is not really necessary to use the balancer all the time, once or twice a year for maintenance is enough. This battery type is giving me entire satisfaction, they are now cheap, they are reliable, no self-discharge, and provide enough power for digital servo for an afternoon of intensive practice. There are many references of 18650 format cell. I usually don't go higher than 3100mAh because of the higher internal resistance, so the lower capability to draw high current.
